Dance Year 12-13

(Family photo after the last of her 4 spring recitals.)

Along with starting kindergarten last fall, T also started taking 4 dance classes. This was up from two classes the year prior. I was really struggling with letting her take so many classes along with starting a Chinese immersion kindergarten program. The main reason for the two additional classes was she got into the tap performance program and it requires two tap classes along with one ballet class per week. She wanted to stay in musical theater since she didn't want to leave her dance teacher and friends. In the end we agreed that if she couldn't keep up with her school works or she becomes too tired, we'll have to drop something. There were definitely some rough patches along the school year. After about 2-3 months, T was just not picking up tap as well as the other 6 girls. She felt like the teacher was picking on her and cried whenever it was time to go to class. It was hard for me to find the balance between encouraging her to not give up so easily and acting like a crazy dance mom. I did end up offering to take her out of the tap program if it was making her that unhappy. She surprised me by not taking the easy way out. She knew she had to work a bit harder and she did that. I think by the end of the year, she gained so much more confidence going through that and learned that hard work does pay off. That was really all C and I wanted her to get out of dance school. I'm pretty sure we don't have it in us to be crazy dance parents, despite the fact that she'll be taking 5 classes in September! (That will be another post and I really don't want to think about that yet.) Now, dance year in review through pictures.
